Bots and Awards and Stuff

April was a big month for my research team and me!

I and my team have been working on “You Are a River: Reorienting a Civic Waterbot from the Bottom Up” intensively for 6+ months, and I’m thrilled that in April the paper was published in the the Proceedings of SIGCHI 2026. Huge shoutout to Claire Lauer and Liliana Caughman, who in addition to doing the research went to Barcelona to present the paper, and to Srinivasan Ravichandran, who in addition to doing the research fought the formatting fight multiple times to get the paper ready. This was a huge, complex effort that ranks as one of the most satisfying papers I’ve ever completed.

In news related to Waterbot: I’m so excited to share that the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative (AWII) has received a Crescordia Award for Ensuring Water for the Future of Arizona through the Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Awards. AWII is the organization that funded the Arizona Water Chatbot that I am leading and the Flow Forward VR project that I worked on.

Finally, I’m really glad to have worked with the ASU Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics on writing a white paper for faculty called “What is AI?” The paper is for teachers who want to go a bit deeper on the technical aspects of what AI is, the history of AI, and how those two come together to create the situation we are in now. The paper is available at the Lincoln Center’s website.

Thank you to Marisa Duarte and Nicholas Proferes, who invited me into this project!
